Industrial Water Filtration for Dye Penetrant Inspection Systems

The non-destructive testing (NDL) technique known as Liquid Penetrant Inspection, LPI, (also known as Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection, FPI) uses fluorescent dyes to locate defects in castings, forgings and weldments. Industries that use LPI/FPI include aerospace, automotive, power generation, petrochemical and oil and gas. After inspection, the parts must be thoroughly cleaned with water to remove the dye penetrant.

Disposing of the wastewater from dye penetrant inspection can be very expensive. Instead of hauling away fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) wastewater. Carbtrol Corporation provides industrial water filtration solutions for dye penetrant inspections. Carbtrol uses activated carbon technology to remove fluorescent dyes by trapping the dye molecules in the pores of the carbon. This prevents discharge of fluorescent dye and allow manufacturers to recycle and reuse the water.

Carbtrol offers two industrial water filtration systems for dye penetrant removal. Please note, however, that dye formulations vary and not all dyes will be removed by carbon. Therefore the first installation should be treated as a pilot test.

Carbtrol’s Solutions for Dye Removal from LPI/FPI Process Water include:

For Soluble (dissolved) Dye, Carbtrol Corporation recommends two (2) Model L-1-CLR Activated Carbon Industrial Water Filtration Canisters in series

L-1-CLR Features:

  • up to 10 GPM
  • 200 pounds of reactivated (larger pore size) carbon
  • Large 1-1/4″ internal piping. Low pressure drop allows operation of three canisters in series.
  • Standard FPT couplings for easy installation – saves time and money.
  • Special “no leak” lid gasket.
  • Heavy duty steel drums.
  • Piping design eliminates channeling.

For Dispersed (emulsified phase) dye, Carbtrol recommends one (1) ZA-1 Zeolite Media Canister followed by one (1) L-1-CLR Activated Carbon Industrial Water Filtration Canister in series

ZA-1 Features:

  • up to 10 GPM
  • 300 pounds organophilic zeolite media
  • Large 1-1/4″ internal piping. Low pressure drop allows operation of three canisters in series.
  • Standard FPT couplings for easy installation – saves time and money.
  • Special “no leak” lid gasket.
  • Heavy duty steel drums.
  • Piping design eliminates channeling.
