Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated substances, known as PFAS, are a class of man-made chemicals that do not break down in the environment. Recently PFAS have been identified as a major source of water contamination. Manufacturing facilities, landfills and locations that use firefighting foam, such as airports and military installations, are all sources of PFAS. PFAS filters through the soil and makes its way into groundwater. Since the EPA has designated a health advisory level for PFOA and PFOS, many states now require PFAS contaminants to be removed from wastewater and groundwater remediation systems as well as from purge water and Investigative Derived Waste (IDW).

PFAS removal using activated carbon adsorption has been extensively studied and is recognized by the EPA as the most economical way to remove longer chain PFAS like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Activated carbon is an effective adsorbent because it is a highly porous material and provides a large surface area to which contaminants may adsorb.

Carbtrol has been providing activated carbon system for contaminant removal for over 35 years. Drawing on our extensive experience, Carbtrol has developed a PFAS treatment system. Carbtrol’s system (pictured below) can remove contaminants down to extremely low (parts-per-trillion) discharge levels. It consists of  a pre-filter, (2) L-1-CL Drum Filters, and a post-filter.  Carbtrol systems have provided PFAS removal for many customers including the US Navy.
